Creating a Personal and Meaningful Tribute

Music often reaches beyond words. It can bring comfort, stir memories and gently express feelings that are hard to say out loud. Whether traditional, modern, religious or simply a favourite song, music can play an important role in honouring someone’s life.

At Arlington Funeral Services, we will guide you through every step and help you choose music that feels appropriate, personal and respectful.

Where Music Can Be Included

Music can be included at several points during the funeral service, such as:

  • As guests arrive
  • During a moment of quiet reflection
  • Accompanying a reading or eulogy
  • With a slideshow or photo tribute
  • As the coffin enters or leaves the chapel
  • At the end of the service as people depart

Some families prefer quiet moments. Others choose one single meaningful piece. There is no right or wrong choice — only what feels right for you.

Accepted Music Formats

Different funeral venues allow different formats. We will guide you based on your chosen location.

Most chapels and crematoria can accept:

  • MP3 or digital audio files
  • CDs (clearly labelled with track numbers)
  • Pre-approved digital playlists
  • USB memory sticks
  • Live musicians (if arranged in advance)

If you would like live music — such as organ, guitar, strings, choir, bagpipes or soloist — we can help you plan and coordinate this ahead of the service.

Choosing the Right Music

Some ideas to help with music selection:

  • A favourite artist, band or genre
  • A hymn, psalm or spiritual song
  • A piece connected to a hobby or passion
  • Instrumental or classical music
  • A tune often played at home or in the car
  • Something that reflects their personality — gentle, joyful or uplifting

Many families choose a peaceful piece on entry, something personal during reflection, and something warm or hopeful for the departure.

Religious & Non-Religious Choices

We can provide suggestions for:

  • Traditional hymns
  • Contemporary worship songs
  • Non-religious or reflective music
  • Instrumental versions of well-known pieces
  • Cultural or regional styles (e.g. Irish, Welsh, Caribbean, Asian)

Your arranger will help ensure all choices are respectful and suitable for your chosen venue.

How to Provide the Music

To make sure everything is prepared and tested in time, we kindly ask that music is provided at least 72 hours before the service.

You can send music in the following ways:

  • Email (digital files)
  • USB memory stick or CD
  • Printed list for organist or musician
  • Streaming links (only if permitted by the venue)

We will coordinate all technical arrangements — so you do not need to worry on the day.

Example Service Structure

Some families find it helpful to follow a simple outline:

Moment In Service Type Of Music
Entry Gentle or reflective
Reflection Favourite or personal song
Committal Quiet background music
Departure Peaceful or uplifting

We are happy to help build a playlist — based on memories, conversations and the personality of your loved one.
